A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Japan late Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor, which occurred off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in the Kyushu region at approximately 9:19 p.m., prompted local authorities to issue a tsunami warning.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of potential tsunami waves up to one meter (3.3 feet) in height, urging residents in coastal areas to remain alert and follow safety precautions.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assessing any potential damage caused by the earthquake.
