Nouri al-Maliki, the Head of the State of Law Coalition (SLC), issued a strong warning on Saturday about efforts to destabilize Iraq’s political system, cautioning that any outbreak of “sedition” would have grave consequences.
Speaking at the founding conference of Karbala’s tribal leaders and sheikhs, al-Maliki accused remnants of ISIS and the dissolved Ba’ath Party of being “tools of sedition” that threaten Iraq’s stability and progress since the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime. He urged increased vigilance against these groups, highlighting their destabilizing influence on the country.
Opposition to Amnesty for Convicted Terrorists
Al-Maliki also claimed that unnamed factions were pressuring authorities to abolish the Accountability and Justice Commission and release convicted terrorists, a move he vowed to oppose vehemently.
“We will not allow it,” he declared, emphasizing that his coalition would resist any efforts to pardon individuals convicted of terrorism-related crimes.
Warning Against Syrian-Style Conflict in Iraq
He further cautioned against attempts to replicate Syria’s conflict in Iraq, asserting that despite security challenges, Iraq remains stable and democratic. However, he accused sectarian groups and Ba’athist operatives of exploiting weaknesses in security oversight to advance their agendas.
