One of Sherwan Sherwani’s lawyers informed KNN that his release has been delayed due to incomplete administrative procedures and will not take place today.

Mohammed Abdullah, Sherwani’s legal representative, stated , “We will be following up to complete these procedures tomorrow, Monday.”

He further noted that a case against Sherwani was initiated in 2022; however, it will not pose any obstacles to his release as “bail will cover him.”

Sherwan Sherwani, a Kurdish journalist and human rights activist, was arrested in October 2020.

On July 20, 2023, the Erbil Criminal Court sentenced Sherwani to four years in prison for document forgery under Articles 295 and 298 of the Iraqi Penal Code. Following an appeal, the KRG Court of Appeal reduced his sentence to two years.
